The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is served not only by elected officials but by volunteers through appointment to its various committees. The Town is looking for people who have an interest in contributing to their community to make Niagara-on-the-Lake a great place to live, work and visit!
To be eligible for appointment to a Committee, you must:
- Be a resident of the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake and/or work or have a place of business in the municipality; and
- Have a demonstrated commitment and interest in the community.
The Selection Committee is comprised of four (4) members of Council, the Chief Administrative Officer, and the Town Clerk who will review applications based on established skills-based criteria. Efforts will be made to appoint members representative of all Niagara-on-the-Lake communities and the diversity of its residents.

Committee of Adjustment / Property Standards Order Appeals Committee Recruitment (2025 - 2027)
The Committee of Adjustment/Property Standards Order Appeals Committee is a statutory tribunal which operates independently from Council. Authority is delegated to Council under the provisions of the Planning Act and the Building Code Act to hold public hearings for the purposes of making decisions with respect to applications for: Minor Variances; Legal Non-Conforming Uses (extension/enlargement/similar use); Consents to Sever Land; Fence Variances; Sign Variances; and Property Standard Order Appeals.
Council is looking for two members to sit on the Committee of Adjustment/Property Standards Order Appeals Committee for the remainder of the term of Council (now to February 2027) or until a successor is appointed:
- One (1) Member at large;
- One (1) Representative of the Agricultural Community (Preference will be given to a bona fide farmer with education and experience in agriculture.)

Qualifications
- An understanding of the planning framework and applicable planning documents, including Provincial, Regional and Town land use planning policy and legislation.
- An understanding of property standard regulations, including the Building Code Act, Town Official Plan, Zoning By-law and Property Standards By-law.
- An understanding of fence regulations, including the Municipal Act and Town Fence By-law No. 4778-14.
- An understanding of sign regulations in accordance with the Town Sign By-law No.4568-12.
Other Requirements
Members must be:
- At least 18 years of age.
- Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
- A Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake resident, work in the municipality or have a place of business in the municipality.
- Not employed by the municipality.
Members shall:
- Have access to a computer and an email address to receive meeting invitations and agenda packages with large files.
- Have a demonstrated commitment to and interest in the community.
- Be objective and have an open mind in order to fully consider the recommendations of Staff and the evidence provided.
Time Commitment
- Preparing for and attending approximately 12 meetings annually on the third Thursday of the month.
- Available and committed to conducting site inspections of all subject properties.
- Attending training sessions (online and in-person professional development).
Selection Process
Appointments to the Committee of Adjustment/Property Standards Order Appeals Committee are made by Town Council. Efforts will be made to appoint members representative of all Niagara-on-the-Lake communities and the diversity of its residents.
