Public Announcement - Council Approves Changes to Short Term Rental Licensing and Special Event Permit Fees

At the December 10, 2024, Council meeting, Council approved two motions introducing changes to Short Term Rental licenses and Special Event Permit applications in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Short Term Rentals:
Council has paused the issuance of new Short Term Rental licenses for Cottage Rentals, Country Inns, Vacation Apartments, and Villas effective December 10, 2024. Those with existing Short Term Rentals can still renew their license at https://www.notl.com/short-term-rentals, and applications already in process as of December 10, 2024, will continue.

Staff will conduct a detailed analysis of Short Term Rentals in relation to how many are in the community and if there should be a maximum limit imposed, with findings to be presented to Council by June 1, 2025.

Town Staff are happy to assist applicants through the renewal process and answer any questions. Please call 905-468-3266 or email str@notl.com to request assistance.

Special Event Permits:
Starting January 1, 2025, a $100 application fee will apply to all Special Event Permits to cover administrative processing costs. This interim fee ensures fair cost recovery while maintaining support for community events. A comprehensive review of the Special Events program is underway, with recommendations expected later in 2025. Stay tuned for more information about how to get involved in the engagement process.

Next Steps:
The Town will begin implementing these changes as outlined while continuing to engage with residents, businesses, and other community members to ensure transparency and effectiveness.
