News Release - Niagara-on-the-Lake Recognized in the 2025 Niagara Biennial Awards

Niagara-on-the-Lake is proud to share that two local projects have been honoured in the 2025 Niagara Biennial Awards, which celebrate design excellence across Niagara. The Diverging Diamond Interchange in Glendale has received the Award of Excellence for Enduring Design, and the Heritage District Feature has been recognized for its outstanding craft and skill.

The Niagara Region’s Diverging Diamond Interchange, the first of its kind in Ontario, was praised for its innovative design, which strengthens the connection between the two halves of Glendale on either side of the QEW. By incorporating active transportation features for pedestrians and cyclists alongside enhanced motoring facilities, the interchange creates a safer, more efficient roadway. This project serves as the foundation for future growth and development in Glendale and reflects a forward-thinking approach that is still new to many Canadians. The Town is honoured to have been chosen as the location for this advanced and unique project.

The Heritage District Feature, built using dry-laid stone, was recognized for its craftsmanship and artistry. The Jury highlighted the masons’ ability to interpret the design and build the feature by eye and hand, demonstrating the critical role of skilled trades in translating vision into reality. This project beautifully honours Niagara-on-the-Lake’s history and architectural charm. Thank you to the Gerald Kowalchuk Family Fund for their generous donation, which made this project possible, as well as the landscape architect, Seferian Design Group (SDG), and the lead landscape contractor, Three Seasons Landscape Group.

“While the Diverging Diamond represents a bold step toward modern infrastructure, the Heritage District Feature celebrates the Town’s history and timeless character,” stated Lord Mayor Gary Zalepa. “This recognition reflects the duality of Niagara-on-the-Lake: its deep roots in heritage and its commitment to innovation. Congratulations to everyone involved in both projects.”

These awards support Council’s 2022-2027 Strategic Plan, particularly the priorities of connectivity, heritage preservation, and economic growth. By integrating innovative infrastructure and preserving historical elements, these projects contribute to building a thriving community for future generations.

“Being featured in the Niagara Biennial Awards is a testament to the power of collaboration and vision,” stated CAO Bruce Zvaniga. “We are proud to see these projects recognized and look forward to the continued positive impact they will have on our community.”

Both projects demonstrate how thoughtful design and strategic planning can balance progress with preservation. Thank you to the Niagara Biennial Awards for these recognitions!
