Media Release - Town Council Approves Locations of the Rainbow Crosswalk & Benches

At the July 25 Council Meeting, Town Council approved the locations of one rainbow crosswalk and five rainbow benches in Niagara-on-the-Lake. A public engagement survey, open from June 1 to June 15, allowed for community feedback about the proposed locations and informed Council’s decision.

The rainbow crosswalk will be installed at the Intersection of Niagara Stone Road and Anderson Lane. One rainbow bench will be installed in each of the five communities across Niagara-on-the-Lake:

  • Centennial Park (Virgil)
  • Mary and King Street (Old Town)
  • Niagara on the Green Park (Glendale)
  • Queenston Firehall (Queenston)
  • Sparky’s Park (St. Davis)

“In support of the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community, I am proud to say that the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake will be installing a rainbow crosswalk and benches,” stated Lord Mayor Betty Disero. “This project demonstrates the Town’s commitment to a progressive community.”

As directed by Council during the July 25, 2022, Council Meeting, Lord Mayor Disero and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee will be facilitating a fundraising activity to offset the costs of this initiative.

“The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is committed to fostering an equitable and inclusive community where everyone feels a sense of belonging,” stated CAO Marnie Cluckie. “The rainbow crosswalk and benches will be a visible reminder that everyone is welcome in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Town Staff is committed to efficiently and effectively completing the installations.”

Once the project is complete, it will be announced on the Town’s website and social media channels. Stay tuned!
