This weekend, the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s volunteer firefighters suited up to participate in a two-day training initiative at Fire Station 1 located at 22 Anderson Lane, which benefitted all experience levels within the department.
Approximately 40 volunteer firefighters were trained on the recognition and prevention of flashover, which is an enclosed area that suddenly becomes inflamed from floor to ceiling and is a temperature-driven event that is not survivable if within the affected area. Flashover training plays an integral part in ensuring Niagara-on-the-Lake firefighters can possess situational awareness to keep them safe when performing interior firefighting operations.
“This past weekend, our volunteer firefighters were provided the opportunity to train for proficiency under realistic conditions, providing the best level of preparation possible,” stated CAO Marnie Cluckie. “The training that occurred is ultimately about supporting firefighters’ safety and survival as they respond in our community. I want to thank our Fire Chief, Nick Ruller, and his team for organizing critical training initiatives such as this one.”
“Our volunteer firefighters here in Niagara-on-the-Lake are a hardworking, committed team of individuals,” stated Lord Mayor Betty Disero. “Their continued commitment to participating in high quality training further improves their excellent skillset, and ensures their training is as current as possible.”
“Providing on-site training to simulate an actual fire scenario is the best way for our firefighters to learn and prepare for emergencies,” stays Fire Chief Nick Ruller. “This trailer, which looked similar to a sea can container, allowed for multiple classes to be taught. In addition to flashover recognition, crews were taught rollover tactics, flow path, and basic fire behaviour.”
Staff engaged Trident Fire Training & Consultancy who utilized the Swede Survival Mobile Phase One fire behaviour trainer.
