Media Release - Niagara-on-the-Lake Invites Community Feedback on Heritage Trail Phase 2

The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is looking for feedback from the community about the design concept for Phase 2 of the Heritage Trail Rehabilitation Project from East & West Line to Line 3 Road.

Phase 1 of this project (from John Street to East & West Line) was completed in Fall 2021. Phase 2 involves the rehabilitation of approximately 2.56 kilometres of trail, with a limestone screening trail closely following the existing path. This design concept considers the trees and current alignment of the existing trail. There are four planned phases to complete the trail rehabilitation from Old Town to York Road.

"The Heritage Trail is a unique and wonderful asset for the community," stated Lord Mayor Gary Zalepa. "The initiative to improve this trail serves as a way to promote active transportation, linking our villages and ensuring a safe passage for all. On behalf of Town Council, I would like to extend my gratitude to the hardworking Heritage Trail Committee Members and Town Staff for making this project a reality. I look forward to seeing the benefits for the community."

Have your say about the design of Phase 2 of the Trail, including the width, trail positioning, and surface, by:

  • Attending a Public Information Centre on Thursday, September 21, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Community Centre Lobby (14 Anderson Lane, Niagara-on-the-Lake)
  • Providing your feedback on the Join the Conversation project page at www.jointheconversationnotl.org/heritage-trail until Friday, October 6

"As we move onto the next phase of the Heritage Trail rehabilitation project, the Town welcomes feedback from the community on design concepts for the trail," said CAO Marnie Cluckie. "The Town is committed to ensuring this revitalized public space is safe, accessible, inclusive, and reflective of the community's vision for a vibrant and connected neighbourhood. This initiative helps to join multiple communities and foster a sense of connection, and we look forward to bringing this project phase to fruition with our dedicated Staff, Heritage Trail Committee and community partners."

The Heritage Trail Committee was formed in 2019 to preserve and rehabilitate the trail that follows the historic Erie and Ontario Railroad along Concession 1. This was one of the first railroads in the province and was used for over 100 years.

The Heritage Trail fundraising group continues to seek donations toward upcoming phases of this important community initiative. Donations can be made online via PayPal, Debit, MasterCard and Visa, or sent to: The Heritage Trail Committee c/o of the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, PO Box 100, Virgil, Ontario, L0S 1T0. Donations of $25 and more will receive a charitable tax receipt.
