Frequently Asked Questions: Watermain Breaks – Claims from Residents to Niagara Region

1. What happened to the watermains?

Some Queenston and St. Davids residents experienced a high-pressure situation in the water system. This pressure exceeded normal operating levels, and some residents experienced adverse effects. The failure was caused by a piece of failed copper that split in the pressure valve, not allowing it to control the pressure within the system.

  1. When did this occur?

This incident occurred in the early morning hours of December 26, 2022.

  1. How long did this take to fix?

The failed piece of copper was fixed after approximately 3 hours, and the valve was monitored to ensure no additional issues occurred. Some remaining pressures in the system lasted into the afternoon.

  1. Is the water supply system in Niagara-on-the-Lake managed by the Town?

No, the Regional Municipality of Niagara (“Niagara Region”) manages the water pressures in the Town’s water supply system.

  1. How did Niagara Region discover this incident?

On the morning of December 26, Niagara Region’s monitoring system alerted them to water pressure levels exceeding normal operating levels. Crews responded immediately, inspected the valve, and determined that the failure was caused by a piece of failed copper that split in the pressure valve, not allowing it to control the pressure within the system.

  1. I experienced adverse effects from this incident and wish to submit a claim. Where do I submit this claim to?

All claims related to this incident must be submitted to Niagara Region directly, not the Town.

  1. I have received a denial letter from the Town’s insurer about my claim. What does this mean?

Unfortunately, if you submitted a claim to the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, you may receive or have received a denial claim letter from the Town’s insurer.

This does not mean that a claim is not possible. If you have already submitted a claim to the Town, the insurer has advised that you must resubmit a claim directly to Niagara Region.
