On Tuesday, September 27, Niagara-on-the-Lake held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the Town’s first disc golf course located at the Community Centre (14 Anderson Lane).
This new course was made possible through a generous donation from Carole and Kurt Von Pasecky on behalf of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Rotary Club.
“This nine-hole course is great for both beginners to disc golf and those with experience,” stated Lord Mayor Betty Disero. “On behalf of Town Council, thank you to Carole and Kurt Von Pasecky and the Niagara-on-the-Lake Rotary Club for facilitating the implementation of this fun activity.”
Disc golf is similar to traditional ball golf; however, players throw a disc into a basket instead of putting a ball into a hole. The object of the game is to finish the course in the fewest number of throws, with the lowest score winning. A hole is started by someone throwing a disc from the tee pad area and completed when the disc rests in the basket.
One hundred discs have been made and are available at the front desk of the Community Centre for sale and free rental.
“The Town is delighted to bring one of the fastest growing sports in the world right here to Niagara-on-the-Lake,” stated CAO Marnie Cluckie. “This sport is designed to be enjoyed by all age groups, and I encourage everyone to check it out the next time they are at the Community Centre!”
“The Rotary Club of Niagara-on-the-Lake is proud to offer such a fast-growing recreational sport to the Town that is accessible, fun and free for all ages to play. A special thank you to Carol and Kurt Von Pasecky for their generous donation making this project a reality,” stated Paul Lalonde, Niagara-on-the-Lake Rotary Club Representative.
Thank you to the donors, the Niagara-on-the-Lake Rotary Club, Town Council, Staff, the disc golf course developer Darrell Bankes of Innova Disc Golf, and all those who helped bring disc golf to Niagara-on-the-Lake.
