The Town has received $60,400 in funding through the Healthy Communities Initiative to continue the reconstruction of Niagara-on-the-Lake's Upper Canada Heritage Trail, from East West Line to Line 1 Road.

"On behalf of Town Council, thank you to the Healthy Communities Initiative for supporting this project," stated Lord Mayor Betty Disero. "Many residents enjoy the Heritage Trail, and with this funding, I hope that more residents and visitors will have an opportunity to explore and enjoy the beauty and the accessibility of the trail."

The reconstruction phase from Charlotte Street to East West Line was completed in Fall 2021 through the dedication of Town Staff and community donations. This funding will be used to complete a section of Phase 2.

"The Town is excited to continue moving forward with the reconstruction of the Heritage Trail, making it an accessible, safe, vibrant public space that helps improve residents' quality of life," stated CAO Marnie Cluckie. "The reconstruction will help to join multiple communities and foster a sense of connection. Thank you to Town Staff, the Heritage Trail Committee and community partners for their dedication to this project."

The Heritage Trail Committee was formed in 2019 to preserve and rehabilitate the trail that follows the historic Erie and Ontario Railroad along Concession 1. This was one of the first railroads in the province and was used for over 100 years.

The Heritage Trail fundraising group continues to seek donations toward this important community initiative. Donations can be made online via PayPal, Debit, MasterCard and Visa, or sent to The Heritage Trail Committee c/o of the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, PO Box 100, Virgil, Ontario, L0S 1T0. Donations of $25 and more will receive a charitable tax receipt.
