The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake extends a huge thank you to snowplow operators and the community as a whole for working diligently and together in response to the snow emergency that occurred Sunday night through Monday.
The main roads took approximately 10 to 14 hours to plow, and secondary roads and side streets took approximately 11 to 15 hours between Monday and Tuesday this week. Crews plowed nearly 480 km of road twice in the span of two days. That distance is the equivalent of driving from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Sudbury, Ontario and back. That is a significant distance for snowplows to travel.
Town crews have plowed and brushed back all roads in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Currently, Staff are plowing priority sidewalks and will move to secondary sidewalks early next week. These ongoing cleanup efforts will likely take several days.
“Thank you to our residents for showing great patience and community spirit as our crews worked as quickly as possible,” stated Lord Mayor Betty Disero. “Town Staff appreciate residents cooperating with snowplow operations and for staying off the roads as much as possible. That is really the spirit of Niagara-on-the-Lake, neighbour helping neighbour.”
“Our snowplow operators have been working tirelessly to clear roads and sidewalks and have been doing an incredible job in keeping our residents safe,” stated CAO Marnie Cluckie. “In addition, our Customer Experience and Communications team continues to respond to questions and post snow-related updates on the Town’s website and social media channels to ensure the community is well-informed.”
A reminder that clearing the pile of snow left by plows at the end of driveways is not a service the Town can provide at this time as it is not feasible financially or possible with limited resources. The Town is hopeful that community members will provide assistance where they can for family, friends, and neighbours.
Residents are reminded not to leave vehicles parked on public roadways before, during, or after a snowfall. This is to prevent interference with traffic movement and snow removal efforts.
If you are a resident looking for help clearing your driveways or walkways, please look on the Town’s social media pages for a list of willing contacts or call one of our friendly Customer Experience Representatives at 905-468-3266 ext. 0 for assistance.
Thank you to the volunteers, friends and neighbours who are assisting those in need!
Staff continues to clear roads and respond to the many inquiries coming in. Cleanup efforts are anticipated to continue throughout next week.
