Town Responds to Unauthorized Work at Designated Heritage Property on Niagara River Parkway

The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is aware of unauthorized work that recently took place at 14785 Niagara River Parkway, a Part IV designated property under the Ontario Heritage Act and a valued heritage asset within our community.

Yesterday afternoon, the Town received a complaint regarding unauthorized work in progress at the property, related to the schoolhouse structure. Staff responded immediately, attended the site and have since remained actively engaged, including conducting additional visits to the property, documenting the situation with photographs, and coordinating the next steps.

Pursuant to Subsection 14(1) of the Building Code Act, 1992, a Stop Work Order has been issued, and the property owner has been directed to obtain the appropriate permits and approvals before any further work can proceed. Orders have also been issued to ensure the building is properly secured. The Town is working with the property owner to achieve compliance. If compliance is not achieved, the Town will pursue additional enforcement measures as permitted by legislation. This violation may also be subject to enforcement under the Ontario Heritage Act, which provides for significant penalties.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is deeply committed to the preservation and protection of its heritage resources. Our built heritage is a defining part of our community’s identity, and the Town takes any unauthorized alterations seriously.

We appreciate the community’s vigilance and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
