The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is inviting residents to share their input as part of the development of its first-ever Urban Forestry Management Plan (UFMP), a key initiative aligned with Council’s Strategic Plan and commitment to environmental stewardship.
The Town’s urban forest includes all trees and woody vegetation across the community, from parks and streets to private yards, natural areas, and rural landscapes. The UFMP will serve as a long-term guide for the protection, planting, and maintenance of trees throughout Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Residents are encouraged to participate in a community survey by May 27, 2026, to gather feedback on local priorities, values, and perspectives regarding trees and green spaces.
Input collected through the survey will help the Town:
- Understand community perspectives on trees
- Identify priorities, concerns, and opportunities
- Learn which environmental and community benefits are most valued
- Inform future policies, programs, and investments
- Gauge interest in tree planting and stewardship initiatives
“The Town’s urban forest plays a vital role in supporting environmental sustainability, enhancing community well-being, and preserving the natural character of Niagara-on-the-Lake,” said Lord Mayor Gary Zalepa. “We encourage all residents to take part in this survey and help shape the future of our community’s tree canopy.”
“Developing the Town’s first Urban Forestry Management Plan is an important step forward in understanding how residents value trees and green spaces,” said CAO Nick Ruller. “This work will help ensure that tree health and canopy growth remain a priority for our community now and into the future.”
