On September 30, we pause as a community to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day is an opportunity to honour the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. It is also a time for reflection on the lasting impacts of these institutions and the importance of acknowledging this painful chapter in our country’s history.
Council’s 2022-2027 Strategic Plan outlines advancing Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, both within the organization and through community partnerships and public initiatives.
We invite residents of Niagara-on-the-Lake to join us in learning, listening, and reflecting. Meaningful reconciliation requires a commitment to understanding the truths of the past and working together toward healing and respect.
As leaders of this community, we affirm our responsibility to continue building relationships with Indigenous Peoples based on respect, partnership, and shared understanding. We encourage all residents to participate in events, wear orange, and take time to reflect on the importance of reconciliation, not just on this day, but every day.
Together, let us honour Survivors, remember those we lost, and strengthen our commitment to creating a more inclusive and compassionate future.
