Enbridge Gas Inc. (Enbridge Gas) is helping Niagara-on-the-Lake Fire & Emergency Services purchase firefighting training materials through Safe Community Project Assist. Safe Community Project Assist is a program with the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council (FMPFSC) that supplements existing training for Ontario volunteer and composite fire departments in the communities where Enbridge Gas operates.
Each year, Niagara-on-the-Lake Fire & Emergency Services applies for various Enbridge grants and/or donation opportunities. This year, the Town is grateful to receive $5000 toward these training materials.
"The Town’s Fire Department is fortunate to have been selected as a recipient of the Safe Community Project Assist Program,” stated Fire Chief Jay Plato. “We have been able to provide our firefighters with the training materials they need to create an environment to be high-performing, progressive and visionary in delivering fire service. Additionally, we have been able to purchase a number of leadership publications specific to the fire service. The Fire Department demonstrates dedication to the community by providing our firefighters with the opportunity to learn and become leaders at the fire station and within the community where we all live, work and play."
“This is a wonderful program that helps to improve fire departments by purchasing new training materials,” stated Lord Mayor Gary Zalepa. “Investing in and developing the leadership skills of our firefighters is critical for enhanced fire response in the community. On behalf of Town Council, thank you to the Safe Community Project Assist program, Enbridge Gas and the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council for supporting Niagara-on-the-Lake.”
“At Enbridge Gas, safety is our priority. We’re proud to support Ontario firefighters who share our commitment to keeping our communities safe, healthy and vibrant,” says Nick Clip, Manager Operations, Hamilton Niagara Region, Enbridge Gas.
This year’s $250,000 donation from Enbridge Gas will be shared by 50 Ontario fire departments, including Niagara-on-the-Lake Fire & Emergency Services. Funds are used to purchase educational materials to assist in training firefighters in life-saving techniques.
“Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Fire & Emergency Services is comprised of a team of individuals who are dedicated to continuous improvement efforts and education related to fire prevention and safety, among other things,” stated CAO Marnie Cluckie. “With new materials comes new techniques, training opportunities, and outcomes, and I am thankful for the opportunity to continue fostering a learning environment within our wonderful fire community. Thank you to Fire Chief Jay Plato and his team for working with the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council and Enbridge Gas on this initiative.”
Since the launch of Safe Community Project Assist in 2012, 294 grants have been provided to Ontario fire departments for additional firefighter training.
“Safe Community Project Assist improves access to training materials for fire departments,” says Jon Pegg, Ontario Fire Marshal and Chair of the FMPFSC. “Firefighting can be dangerous and unpredictable, and these training materials positively contribute to the health and safety of firefighters and the broader community.”
