As directed by Council, the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is launching a public engagement initiative to gather community and operator feedback focused on Short Term Rentals (STRs) and their role in the community. STRs include bed-and-breakfasts, cottage rentals, country inns, vacation apartments, and villas.
This review aims to gather input on what’s working well and where improvements may be needed in how STRs are managed. This includes exploring a range of potential approaches, such as whether any adjustments to licensing (by hosted/unhosted type or by location) should be considered in the future.
The engagement includes an online survey and two Public Information Centres, providing community members and licensed STR operators with an opportunity to share their feedback.
The online survey will be open from April 20 to May 11 and is available through the Town’s Join the Conversation platform.
“This engagement is an opportunity to connect directly with our community,” said Lord Mayor Zalepa. “Short Term Rentals play an important role in our neighbourhoods, housing, and local economy, and hearing from residents and operators will help inform future discussions and decisions.”
In addition to the survey, the Town will host two Public Information Centres in the Mori Room of the Community Centre (14 Anderson Lane), where attendees can learn more about the review and ask questions:
- Public Information Centre #1: Wednesday, April 29, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
- Public Information Centre #2: Thursday, April 30, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
“The feedback we receive through this engagement will be shared with Council in an Information Report,” said CAO Nick Ruller. “We encourage residents and licensed Short Term Rental operators to participate and share their perspectives. I also want to thank Town Staff for their work in developing and delivering this engagement opportunity.”
