Town Statement - Town Provides Update on Sandalwood Pond

Following the September 23 Council meeting, the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is sharing the following information regarding Sandalwood Pond located within the Vineyard Creek Estates Subdivision.

While the pond was engineered and designed in 2005 in accordance with all appropriate standards, recent capacity challenges have been identified, particularly during severe weather events. Consequently, the Town engaged a consultant to evaluate conditions and provide recommendations. The consultant confirmed that the system is experiencing increased flows, and the Town is evaluating contributing factors, including property discharges into the pond and regional water redirection.

Next steps include continuing technical assessments, conducting additional site evaluations, and developing targeted mitigation measures. The Town will keep the community informed by sharing updates on findings as they arise and outlining the actions being taken in response.

Like many municipalities across the province, the Town’s infrastructure was designed to meet expected weather and environmental conditions. However, as the impacts of increasingly severe weather events become more frequent, the Town remains committed to critically reviewing and updating its engineering standards to ensure local infrastructure continues to meet evolving needs and conditions.
