As part of the Town's ongoing assessment of yesterday's flooding event, Staff completed a preliminary review of the King Street culvert after observing significantly more water in the surrounding area than was experienced following the major rainfall event the previous week.
Based on the information available to date, there is no indication that the permanent culvert infrastructure failed. The culvert itself remained structurally sound and functioned as designed. During the review, Staff identified a temporary obstruction at the inlet to the culvert that significantly reduced the flow of water during the extreme rainfall event. The obstruction has since been removed.
Staff are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the obstruction and gather additional information. The Town recognizes the significant impacts this flooding had on residents and businesses in the Old Town area. Staff remain committed to understanding what occurred, ensuring the drainage system continues to function as intended, and taking any appropriate actions identified through this review.
We appreciate the community's patience and understanding as this work continues and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
