The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is pleased to announce the reopening of the playground at Virgil Sports Park following the installation of three belt swings, a tot swing and an accessible swing, along with a new rubberized play surface designed to enhance accessibility, safety, and play opportunities for children and families.
"The reopening of this playground reflects Council’s commitment to listening to residents and investing in amenities that enhance quality of life," said Lord Mayor Gary Zalepa. "The addition of new swings provides an enjoyable space for local families and visitors for years to come."
The project was initiated in response to community feedback, with residents identifying the addition of swings as a priority for the popular park. The improvements provide more opportunities for children and families to play, connect, and enjoy the outdoors.
The playground has successfully completed all required safety inspections and is now open for public use.
"Projects like this demonstrate how community feedback can help shape our parks and public spaces," said CAO Nick Ruller. "We're pleased to deliver these enhancements and look forward to seeing families enjoy the upgraded playground."
The Town continues to explore additional improvements for Virgil Sports Park. Future enhancements are expected to include additional seating areas and shade features to further improve comfort and accessibility for park users.
The Town thanks residents for their patience during construction and invites the community to visit Virgil Sports Park and enjoy the newly improved playground.
Funding for the playground enhancements was supported through proceeds from the Town's 25th Annual Golf Classic Tournament, held in September 2025. The tournament brought together residents, businesses, sponsors and community partners in support of recreational improvements at Virgil Sports Park, helping make these upgrades possible.
