The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is enhancing how it communicates traffic-related information with the launch of the Municipal 511 platform, providing real-time updates on road and infrastructure impacts. Municipal 511 is part of the Province of Ontario’s 511 system, operated by the Ministry of Transportation, and provides a centralized platform for sharing road and construction information.
Through this licence, the Town can share information about road closures, sidewalk disruptions, and other traffic-related impacts associated with municipal projects. Municipal 511 enables the Town to communicate updates on current, upcoming, and completed projects. Updates are automatically removed once projects are completed, helping to reduce outdated notifications and improve clarity for users.
“This is a great enhancement in how we communicate traffic-related information with residents and visitors,” said Lord Mayor Gary Zalepa. “Providing real-time, accessible information about road and infrastructure impacts helps people plan ahead and navigate our community more easily.”
The platform also integrates with the Waze app, allowing users to view Town updates directly within their navigation experience. Municipal 511 is widely used by municipalities across the region, enabling users to see nearby municipal projects in one place and better plan their travel.
“The introduction of Municipal 511 supports our ongoing efforts to modernize service delivery,” said CAO Nick Ruller. “This tool gives Staff greater control over timely updates while ensuring information remains accurate and relevant.”
The Town will pilot the use of Municipal 511 over the next year to assess its functionality and effectiveness as part of modernizing service delivery. This initiative builds on previous regional coordination and reflects the Town’s move to manage and communicate traffic-related updates directly.
