At tonight’s Council Meeting, Town Council will consider a Staff report recommending that the Town enter into an agreement with the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) in support of the Garden City Skyway Bridge Twinning Project. Representatives from the MTO will be in attendance to deliver a presentation and provide further details on the initiative.
The project, led by the MTO, proposes the construction of a new twin bridge north of the existing Garden City Skyway, located along the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) corridor between Niagara-on-the-Lake and St. Catharines. This major infrastructure initiative is part of a progressive design-build approach to enhance traffic capacity and safety through this vital regional route.
Should Council approve the report, the agreement would outline responsibilities related to the design, construction, inspection, and maintenance of the project. All costs associated with the work, including road realignments and utility relocations affecting municipal infrastructure, would be fully funded by the Ministry of Transportation.
Town roads affected include Coon Road, Niagara Stone Road, Queenston Road, Taylor Road, and York Road, with work extending to municipal utilities and services within the project area.
If approved, the Town would work closely with the MTO to support communication efforts by developing a detailed communication strategy to ensure that impacted businesses, residents, and the broader community remain informed as the project progresses.
