September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to reflect on Canada's historical past regarding the residential school system, educate ourselves on how this legacy continues to affect Indigenous Peoples, and offer support.
Each year, the Town holds a flag-raising and lowering ceremony and reflective walk to encourage meaningful reflection on the tragic history of residential schools and help ensure this legacy is not forgotten. The flag will be lowered at half-mast until October 1, 2026.
Details for the 2026 ceremony are as follows:
- Date: Tuesday, September 29, 2026
- Time: 10:00 a.m.
- Location: Flagpole outside the Town Administration Building (1593 Four Mile Creek Road, Virgil)
- Details: The ceremony will include remarks; afterwards, participants will engage in a reflective walk around the track at the Virgil Sports Park
The Town Administration Building, Operations Building, Niagara-on-the-Lake Community Centre, and Niagara-on-the-Lake Public Library are closed on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, to observe this important day.
