The popular Garden of the Week contest, organized by the Niagara-on-the-Lake Horticultural Society and Communities in Bloom (CIB), invites you to nominate a Niagara-on-the-Lake resident who has an outstanding front yard garden. The contest will run for nine (9) weeks, with gardens to be judged weekly from July 6 to August 31.

“One of the best features of living and visiting Niagara-on-the-Lake is the beautifully maintained gardens, flowers and scenic landscapes that the Town has to offer,” stated Lord Mayor Betty Disero. “I am so excited for this year’s Garden of the Week contest to acknowledge the residents who put great time and effort into their front yard gardens and to celebrate 2022 as the Year of the Garden.”

To submit a nomination:

  • Go to www.jointheconversationnotl.org/garden-of-the-week
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the 2022 Garden of the Week Contest Nomination Form under "Surveys & Forms" for the week in which you are nominating
  • The garden must be a front yard garden within the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake that is visible from the road

The weekly deadline is Monday evening, with the nominations gathered on Wednesday for the Horticultural Society to review. Any submitted nominee not selected as a winner will carry forward to the following week for consideration. Judging criteria are based on streetscape and curb appeal, personal expression and creativity, colour and texture, and maintenance and neatness.

“Niagara-on-the-Lake is known for being “the prettiest Town”, and the care and passion residents put into their personal gardens contributes greatly to this title,” stated CAO Marnie Cluckie. “The Town is looking forward to highlighting all the splendour that our local gardens offer.”

The prizes awarded to the winners each week include a bottle of wine from Konzelmann Estate Winery and a gift card to Sunset Grill. The winner’s gardens will be featured on the Town’s social media channels and in the "News Feed" on the Join the Conversation project page.

“It is always an honour to collaborate on the Garden of the Week Contest with Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Communities in Bloom Committee,” stated Joanne Young, Co-President of Niagara-on-the-Lake Horticultural Society. “This Town is full of garden beauty and we are so proud to showcase these gardens in this annual contest.”

This contest is affiliated with the National Communities in Bloom program that fosters civic pride, environmental responsibility, and beautification through community involvement.

“2022 is the Year of the Garden, and the Communities in Bloom Committee is a proud partner in supporting many garden initiatives during this special year, including the re-activated Garden of the Week Contest,” stated Vicky Downes, CIB Committee Chair. “Stay tuned for more garden initiative throughout the year.”
