Media Release - Niagara-on-the-Lake Receives Funding from British Columbia for 13 For 13 Cultural Festival

The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is excited to announce that it has received a $15,000 contribution from the province of British Columbia’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport toward the 2022 Canada Summer Games 13 For 13 Cultural Festival.

Held on select evenings between August 7 and 20, the 13 For 13 Cultural Festival will see each of Niagara’s municipalities collaborate with one of Canada’s 13 provinces and territories.

The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is paired with the Province of British Columbia to host a 13 For 13 Festival event on Wednesday, August 10, in Simcoe Park. The event will showcase both Niagara-on-the-Lake’s and British Columbia’s unique cultural heritage, entertainment, art, and culinary experiences through a variety of performances, vendors, activities and more.

“Events like 13 For 13 Cultural Festival highlight our incredible diversity and creativity from coast to coast to coast,” says Melanie Mark, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. “I believe these community events have the power to inspire and bring us together. The Province of BC is proud to support and partner with the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake to showcase BC artists and introduce our rich arts and cultural heritage to visitors participating in the Canada Summer Games.”

“The Town is grateful for this contribution toward enhancing our 13 For 13 Cultural Festival in August,” stated Lord Mayor Betty Disero. “The Niagara Canada Summer Games are a unique way to showcase Canadian athletes, and it is wonderful that in celebration of the Games, each municipality gets to host an event. We thank British Columbia for working with Town Staff and event planners in hosting this celebration.”

As part of the collaboration, local Vancouver indie-rock artist “Said the Whale” will perform at Niagara-on-the-Lake’s 13 For 13 Cultural Festival. Said the Whale is a JUNO award-winning band that has topped the alternative radio chart and amassed a devoted base of fans. Their most recent album, “Dandelion,” was released in 2021.

“The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is thrilled to partner with British Columbia in this celebratory cultural festival,” stated CAO Marnie Cluckie. “The 13 For 13 Cultural Event is a first of its kind, and we are excited for the opportunity to come together to showcase and celebrate what makes Niagara-on-the-Lake and British Columbia so special. Thank you to everyone involved in the planning, from staff to regional partners to our friends in British Columbia.”
