Discover the real stories of seven United Empire Loyalists who made their way to Niagara in the turbulent aftermath of the American Revolution. More than a history lecture, this is an invitation to explore your own roots: you may have a Loyalist in your family!

    ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Janet Hodgkins, UE, brings a lifelong passion for history, storytelling, and genealogy to this lecture. A graduate of McMaster University (B.A., Honours History) and the University of Western Ontario (Master of Library Science), she spent her career as a Children's Librarian at the Welland Public Library where she honed the art of bringing stories to life.

Janet serves as Programme Chair and Board Director of the Colonel John Butler (Niagara) Branch of the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada, and proudly counts 7 UEL ancestors and 6 ancestors who served in the War of 1812 among her own family tree. She has also been President of the Wainfleet Historical Society since 2009.

Raised in Wainfleet Township, where she still lives on part of her grandparents' farm, Janet's interests span genealogy, culinary history, historical sewing — including period attire for herself and her husband — and a deep love of historical fiction and classic literature.
