The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake continues its recovery work following the significant rainfall and flooding experienced in late July and early August.
While the immediate emergency response has concluded, Town Staff remain actively focused on assessing affected areas, completing critical infrastructure works, responding to flooding-related service requests and reviewing how municipal systems performed during the storms. This work will continue in the weeks and months ahead as the Town moves from immediate recovery toward a more comprehensive review of the events.
Staff are inspecting roads, culverts, storm sewers, municipal drains and other infrastructure in areas affected by flooding. This includes a detailed investigation into the blockage identified at the King Street culvert. Staff are reviewing the nature and location of the obstruction, surrounding site conditions and relevant construction activities, available records and observations, and its potential impact on water flow and surrounding properties. The Town will share further information once the investigation is complete and the findings have been reviewed.
Residents who experienced property damage are encouraged to contact their insurance provider directly for guidance regarding their individual circumstances.
Enhanced flood-related garbage collection and disposal services have now concluded. The additional curbside collection provided in partnership with Niagara Region ended on August 21, following other enhanced waste supports for affected households. The Town thanks residents for their patience and cooperation throughout the cleanup.
As recovery work continues, residents, businesses and agricultural properties that experienced flooding are encouraged to report their impacts through My.NOTL. These reports help Staff understand where flooding occurred, identify trends and problem areas, plan future infrastructure improvements and support discussions with the Province regarding potential recovery assistance.
The Town continues to work with the Province to better understand eligibility for available disaster recovery programs. Provincial assistance may be available in certain circumstances, including some instances of overland flooding where insurance coverage is not available.
The Niagara Regional Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will also support the Town’s efforts to gather information from affected areas. Additional details about this outreach will be shared as they are finalized.
