Following yesterday's significant rainfall event, the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is transitioning from response to recovery as crews continue working to address the widespread impacts experienced across the community.
Following an assessment of conditions, the Town has declared a Significant Weather Event to support ongoing recovery operations. This declaration recognizes the extensive cleanup required across Niagara-on-the-Lake and advises residents that, while essential services continue, some maintenance activities and response times may be temporarily reduced as Staff prioritize recovery efforts.
Town crews have received more than one hundred service requests related to flooding, debris, road conditions, and drainage concerns, and continue working throughout the municipality to assess damage, restore affected areas, and respond to requests as quickly as possible. Staff are conducting inspections of roads, bridges, culverts, trails, parks, stormwater infrastructure, and other municipal assets to assess the full extent of the impacts, identify any safety concerns, and prioritize cleanup and repairs.
The Town's new Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system has been instrumental in managing the high volume of service requests, allowing Staff to efficiently track, prioritize, and respond to community concerns while providing residents with timely updates throughout the recovery process.
The Town recognizes that this event has had significant impacts on the local business community and agricultural sector, including crop damage and other economic losses. Staff are in communication with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness and other partners to help assess impacts and identify available supports where appropriate. Staff will also be following up directly with businesses and agricultural operations that have submitted service requests to better understand the impacts they have experienced, provide available information, and connect them with resources where possible. Staff are also proactively reaching out to key community partners and stakeholder groups to help ensure those most impacted are aware of available information and resources.
Residents, businesses and members of the agricultural community are reminded to continue reporting concerns through the Town's Service Request system, which allows Staff to prioritize and respond as efficiently as possible. Call 905-468-3266 ext. 0 or submit an online service request.
As cleanup efforts continue, residents are encouraged to:
- Place flood-damaged debris at the curb where safe to do so. The Town is coordinating options for special debris collection and will provide additional details as they become available.
- Use caution around flooded areas, damaged roads, ditches, and waterways, and never drive through standing water.
- Follow all posted road closures and traffic control measures.
