All remaining public health measures are expected to lift on April 27
On March 9, 2022, the Chief Medical Officer of Health announced that with continued improvements to key public health indicators, Ontario will remove the mandatory masking requirements for most settings on Monday, March 21, 2022, at 12:01 a.m.
Exceptions to this include specific settings such as public transit, health care settings, long-term care homes, and congregate care settings.
The following are key dates regarding the removal of COVID-19 mandates, as outlined by the province:
- March 21: Majority of masking mandates end
- March 28: Reopening Ontario Act (ROA) expires
- April 27: All remaining public health measures end, such as removing masking mandates in remaining settings and removing any emergency orders under the ROA As Directives are revoked, individual organizations will continue to have the authority to keep requirements in place.
“I want to thank the Niagara-on-the-Lake community for your resilience throughout the past two years as we navigated the unchartered waters of COVID-19,” stated Lord Mayor Betty Disero. “While these steps are certainly exciting, we must remember that the COVID-19 virus is still among us, and we must learn to live with this virus to the best of our ability. It is still as important as ever to get vaccinated if you have not already, as this will help to protect yourselves and others close to you amid these reopening efforts.”
“This update from the province signals how effective our united and cooperative efforts have been in slowing the spread of COVID-19,” stated CAO Marnie Cluckie. “This journey has been long and tiring; however, through standing strong and standing together, we have effectively navigated this global pandemic. Thank you to everyone for your commitment to keeping each other healthy and safe.”
The Town’s Emergency Control Group is currently reviewing mask practices and other safety measures and will provide updates on any changes via the Town's website and social media pages once confirmed.
As masking mandates lift, it is important for everyone to remain kind and respectful to each other as some individuals may choose to continue wearing a mask to feel more comfortable. As we have throughout the pandemic, stay patient and be understanding as we all approach this situation differently.
Thank you, Niagara-on-the-Lake!
